Ankündigung: EISCAT Radar School 2012 at Sodankylä, Finland, 27 August-1 September 2012

In the near future the EISCAT Scientific Association will face a major instrumental upgrade with the ESFRI Roadmap project "EISCAT_3D: A European Three-Dimensional Imaging Radar for Atmospheric and Geospace Research."

EISCAT, in co-operation with the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO), will run a training course for new users of the EISCAT radars, from 27th August to 1st September, 2012 (Monday to Saturday). The training course will be held at Sodankylä, where one of the EISCAT UHF remote sites is located.

The course will cover all essential aspects of the current EISCAT systems, including their science programme. An overview of the existing hardware and software will be provided and future plans will be discussed, with a strong emphasis on EISCAT_3D. Tips on analysing and working with the data will be given and the participants will run an own radar experiment in a hand-on exercise.

The lecturers comprise members of the EISCAT staff and experienced scientists from the user community. As well as providing a good foundation for new EISCAT users, the course will also provide a chance for more established users to be updated on the latest and future developments.

The deadline for registration in the course is 26th June, 2012.

Ankündigung: International ISR workshop for students and new radar users

International ISR workshop for students and new radar users in Greenland 18-23 July, 2011.

This workshop aims at teaching the participants how to request, design and analyze ISR experiments. All participants will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with experienced scientists. The workshop is structured to provide lectures in the morning and hands-on experience in experiment design and analysis in the afternoons. The morning presentations will include an introduction to the theory of incoherent scatter, radar operations, ISR analysis techniques, and the Madrigal database. The afternoon exercises will involve working closely with school staff in the topic areas of proposal design, experiment execution, and data analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to work with data from globally distributed ISRs.

This workshop is suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as scientists new to the incoherent scatter radar technique.

The workshop is jointly sponsored by the EISCAT Scientific Association and the US National Science Foundation.

Ankündigung: EGU General Assembly 2010 in Vienna

Date added: 13.12.2009

Dear colleagues,

Please consider presenting your exciting research results at the following session of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 02 to 07 May 2010.

The assembly is open to the scientists of all nations.

Highlights of recent ionospheric and auroral research by incoherent scatter radars (EGU session ST3.3)

Incoherent scatter radar probing of the upper atmosphere is going through a major resurgence with several new generation radars being built and planned. The new generation radars will have radically improved spatial and temporal resolution and will provide volumetric imaging of our near-Earth environment. In the European sector, the EISCAT incoherent scatter radars and ionospheric heating facility are used for fundamental research of the upper atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere at auroral and polar cap latitudes. Papers will describe highlights from the present radar systems, especially those that emphasize questions to be addressed by the new facilities in the future.

Michael Rietveld (Convener)

Co-Conveners: Ingemar Häggström and Sixto Gonzales

The deadline for abstracts is 18 January 2010

Ankündigung: DPG-Frühjahrstagung 2010 in Bonn

Date added: 13.12.2009

Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
vom 15.-19.
